Baker McKenzie has added 17 corporate and tax lawyers from Munger, Tolles & Olson, including nine partners from the Los Angeles law firm.

The defection amounts to about 10% of the partnership of Munger Tolles, Reuters reports, and “the bulk of Munger Tolles’ corporate team,” according to Bloomberg Law.

Besides the nine partners, Baker McKenzie is adding two counsel and six associates from Munger Tolles, Law.com reports. The two counsel will join Baker McKenzie as partners, along with the other Munger Tolles partners.

The group will add to Baker McKenzie’s mergers and acquisitions, private equity, funds, finance and tax practices, according to a press release.

The acquisition gives Baker McKenzie “one of the largest, if not the largest M&A practices in California,” said Colin Murray, the CEO of the firm’s North America region, in an interview with Bloomberg Law.

Baker McKenzie is bulking up its corporate practice amid an increase in deal work, the articles report.

According to Law.com, the acquisition “will round out deal-making offerings in Baker McKenzie’s transactional-light Los Angeles office while solidifying Munger Tolles as a trial-focused firm.”

Munger Tolles gave this statement to Law.com: “We are sad to see our departing colleagues leave, and we wish them all the best. We are on track for our best financial year in firm history, our clients continue to trust us with their most important matters, including complex litigation and crisis management, and we continue to attract the best lawyers in the country.”
